What is a Competency Model? Examples & Benefits

A competency model is a specific instruction designed by a Human Resource bureau. This states the specific skills, behavioural requirements and knowledge that allows employees to successfully complete their job roles.

  • Competency models establish the performance the way it should look within a company for every job role.
  • The model is there to help the recruitment practices, training, performance evaluation and talent management.

Benefits of competency models:

  • Give the company guidance for the performance within a workplace that matches their goals and strategies.
  • Allows Human Resources (HR) to have a fixed understanding of all the worker’s skills and their abilities within a job role.
  • It will also allow HR to identify the needs in improvement needed with training more specifically.
  • Give the company a better opportunity to keep up to date with their employee’s skills and how they can develop further in the future.
  • Produces a reliable and fair measurement of their performance assessment.

An example of a competency model:

An example would be stating the employee’s title, defining their job role, what their sub-competencies are, the way they behave in their job and what their proficiency standards are.
