BA Says 3,000 Hires Stuck in System as UK Travel Chaos Continues

Executives from BA, EasyJet Plc, and TUI AG spoke before the House of Commons transport committee on Tuesday, claiming that personnel shortages are to blame for the delays and cancellations. EasyJet said it had 140 crew members who have been trained and are ready to fly but do not yet have the necessary airside permits.

According to the airlines, the necessity for five years of reference checks  is also hindering recruitment, with many candidates having a more chaotic career history after the coronavirus prompted them to take short-term positions. Aviation minister Robert Courts stated that he was engaged with the travel industry on the matter and that people would now be able to send a letter detailing their job history rather than addressing each of their previous employers.

While transport hubs around Europe have struggled to deal with an increase in holiday customers, the UK has been particularly badly affected, and airlines have faced charges that they laid off too many employees during the pandemic and were too opportunistic in planning summer timetables.

Huge queues at airport security during the school holidays and Jubilee weekend in early June resulted in missed flights, as well as chaotic and highly harmful scenes as returning passengers attempted to retrieve their own bags after they failed to appear on carousels hours after landing. Airlines have also cancelled hundreds of flights ahead of time due to a lack of employees.

TUI's chief executive officer for markets and airlines, David Burling, stated that the world's largest travel operator, which cancelled UK flights over the holiday, had now leased additional aircraft and cabin staff. It has also hired more customer support representatives, although some of them are still awaiting security clearance.

AG SA owns British Airways, which has cancelled the most flights of the three airlines, is striving to repair confidence with employees and customers, according to Corporate Affairs Director Lisa Tremble. According to EasyJet Chief Commercial Officer Sophie Dekkers, the discounter "hadn't gotten it right, and we need to get it right."

Following the hearing, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Department of Transport issued a joint letter outlining expectations, including an airline review of schedules to ensure that they are "deliverable," and a requirement for airports to form working groups to ensure that operations run smoothly.

Background checks are vital since they assist airlines in hiring the finest staff possible. Airlines, like any other business, seeks to recruit people who will do a good job.
